Albuquerque’s Historic Veterans Post — Est. 1947
American Legion Post 95 was founded in 1947 by 46 African American veterans returning home after serving their country in World War II. Despite their valor and sacrifice, these men were denied membership at other American Legion posts in Albuquerque due to racial segregation — a painful injustice of the era.
Undeterred, they came together and chartered Post 95 — creating a place of belonging, camaraderie, and advocacy. What began as an act of resilience became one of Albuquerque’s most enduring veteran institutions: a post built not just for veterans, but by veterans who refused to let injustice define their legacy.
For over 75 years, Post 95 has stood as a proud symbol of service and community. Today we welcome all veterans, active duty service members, and their families — continuing the mission our founders set in motion more than seven decades ago.
